What is the difference between level 4 and level 5?

Level 4 finishes the seams, fasteners and corners and leaves the paper face of the board exposed between them. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the whole surface so texture and porosity are uniform. Level 5 matters under gloss and satin paint and in raking light; level 4 is right for most rooms under flat or eggshell.

Do you finish drywall that another contractor hung?

Yes. We inspect the hanging first and tell you about anything that will show through the finish, such as loose board, proud fasteners or gaps that need backing, and price any corrections separately so the scope is clear.

Can you match my existing texture?

Almost always. Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel and smooth are all in the regular rotation, and we test the match on a sample area before we do the whole wall.

How much dust should I expect?

Level 4 or Level 5: What Your Space Actually Needs

Level 4 is the standard finish for most interior walls. Joints, screws and corner bead are taped, coated and sanded, and it looks excellent under flat or eggshell paint in normal lighting.

Level 5 adds a thin skim coat across the entire surface. It costs more, and it is the right call when you have gloss or satin paint, big south-facing windows, long open walls, or wall sconces washing light down the surface. Raking light finds every imperfection a level 4 finish is allowed to have.

We tell you which one your job needs and why. If a bedroom is fine at level 4, we are not going to sell you a skim coat for it. If a two-story foyer with a wall of glass needs level 5, we say so before the estimate, not after the paint goes on.

Coats, Drying Time and Dust Control

Taping is done in coats with real drying time between them. Rushing mud is how you get shrinkage lines that show up three weeks after the painter leaves. We embed the tape, block the seams, then float and feather each coat wider than the last so the joint disappears instead of reading as a hump.

Corners get the same attention. Metal or paper-faced bead on outside corners set dead straight off a laser line, inside corners coated one side at a time so both stay crisp, and off-angle beads on vaults and dormers where a standard corner would look soft.

Sanding is where most of the dust comes from, so we use vacuum sanders where they make sense, seal off the rest of the house, and clean the site daily. Then we check the surface under a raking work light, the way your paint will be judged, and touch up before anyone calls it done.

Taping and bedding

Paper or mesh tape embedded in setting compound at all seams, butt joints and inside corners.

Corner bead

Metal, vinyl or paper-faced bead on outside corners, bullnose and off-angle bead where the design calls for it.

Coat, float and sand

Fill, skim and finish coats feathered wide, sanded smooth and checked under raking light.

Texture and skim

Knockdown, orange peel or smooth, matched to the rest of the building, or a full level 5 skim coat for paint-critical walls.

From Bare Board to Paint-Ready Walls

Most of the drywall we finish is board our own crews hung. Our drywall installation team lays out seams and sets fasteners with the finisher in mind, so the taping crew is not fighting proud screws, gaps at the boxes or butt joints in the middle of a lit wall. When one company hangs and finishes, there is no argument about where a problem came from.

We also finish board that someone else hung, and we blend new work into old. On remodels the new finish has to meet existing plaster or textured drywall somewhere, and we float that transition wide enough that the change is invisible under paint. Patches, cracks and water-damaged ceilings run through our drywall repair service, and the finish on a repair is held to the same standard as a new wall.

Once the surface is sanded and checked it is ready for our interior painting crew, or for your painter. Either way, we want you to look at the bare finish under good light before primer goes on, because a spot that is easy to fix now is a repaint later.
